October 24th,
National Bologna Day
Not only is this one of the most popular and most maligned of all sandwich meats, it is also the name of a city in northern Italy in the region of Emilia Romagna. It is from here that so many of our favorite Italian foods hail. Most of our favorite salumis are born here. No that isn’t a mis-spelling of salami, Salumi is the term that refers to all cured meats, including Bologna! Parmesan, Ragu Bolognese, Lasagna, all from this region.

With such a wealth of food the wine scene must be incredible. Alas no. There is a dearth of quality wine regions in Emilia Romagna. In fact, their most famous type of wine has been cheapened over the years through over production and mass marketization, Lambrusco.

Many of us of a certain age may remember the commercials, “Riunite on ice, that’s nice!”. Well, this is where things derailed for the quality Lambrusco movement. Luckily, there has been a bit of a renaissance for quality in this region. (Ha ha, see what I did there, Italian Renaissance) Try one of our quality Lambruscos listed in this newsletter next time you are looking for something to pair with the luscious fatty deliciousness that is the magic of all salumi, or a big plate of Bolognese. Buon Appetito!!
